Education is key. To Learn more about plastic pollution, what it is doing to the environment and how our little efforts can mitigate such a huge problem, read a book or watch a documentary - like this one from the UN : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju_2NuK5O-E
When we're informed, it is important to share that information with those around us.
Are you already doing these, do you think it is something you can do?

“We are producing over 380 million tons of plastic every year, and some reports indicate that up to 50% of that is for single-use purposes – utilised for just a few moments, but on the planet for at least several hundred years. It’s estimated that more than 10 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year.” (https://plasticoceans.org/the-facts/)
Plastic Free July is a global cause, helping to educate millions of people on plastic pollution and how to become part of the solution.
For the next five days, we will be sharing tips that can help to reduce the use of plastic in our surroundings. We hope that these solutions will be used all year long.
My Rotary Family,
I am proud to be a Rotarian! I am most honoured to be elected President of the Rotary Club of Garden City 2023-2024, and with the help and support of my enthusiastic Board and you our fellow Club members, we will do our best to deliver what promises to be an EPIC year.
Our club has been built on a strong and fierce leadership foundation, and I am fortunate to have a membership that is fully committed to the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self and continues to go the extra mile in building our young club, while carrying out the many worthwhile projects that we undertake for the benefit of our community.
As one of the newer clubs in District 7030, we are in a unique position where we are establishing ourselves, building our legacy, writing our history, leaving our footprints in the Rotary world all while, navigating the changing landscape post covid, being challenged by several obstacles. Some of which includes a rapidly expanding local business climate that in turn demands more of our time at work, this leads to a decline in the desire/time willing to be of service to others, and overall new and challenging community needs.
All this to say as Rotarians our efforts are needed more than ever, and we embrace the call of Rotary’s President 2023-2024 Gordon R McInally to “Create Hope in the World”.
Our goals for the new year are clear and focused on:
- Our Membership
- Continuity and Growth
The incoming Board in also keeping with our Strategic Plan, has proposed various undertakings with an aim of engaging and energising members, strengthening our administration i.e., adapting succession planning to ensure continuity in our leaders and growth by executing service projects with a particular focus on the environment, youth development, mental health, literacy, economic and community development, and peace and conflict resolution.
Annually we strive to attain citations at the highest level, both in the District and at a Rotary International level, we believe in letting our work speak for itself and this year is no different, we aim to repeat!
Foundation giving will always be a club priority, our targets are set, with a focus on new Paul Harris Fellows, additional Paul Harris Society Members, and Sustaining Members. Our club has a 100%-member participation rate, which means we ALL contribute, again we say thank you and we aim to repeat!
While our goals have been identified and the work has begun, we recognize that these goals are not attainable without you our members, our most valued asset. Equal attention will be given to the fellowship aspect of service life and there will be many opportunities for us to gather socially, and for us to grow as one unit. Details are listed in our calendar of activities.
In closing, let me take this opportunity to congratulate Immediate Past President Natasha and her Board for a successful year. I would also like to congratulate each of the new Board members. Our fellow club members have shown their confidence in us by electing us to our respective positions, and I look forward to serving with you. I am humbled and elated to serve as President of this E.P..IC. (Enthusiastic People Influencing Change) club.
My anticipation is that during the Rotary year 2023-2024 our club will firmly place its imprint on our community both at home and abroad.
Let's do so while we enjoy great fellowship as a Garden City family. We look forward to having “All Hands on Deck". Your board and I are eager to continue the work that has been started and together WE will make this a memorable year as we “Create Hope in the World”.
International Literacy Day is observed annually around the world on September 8. Founded by proclamation of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, in 1966, to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society
This year’s International Literacy Day will be celebrated worldwide under the theme, Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces
In observance of the day Ministry of Education, Guyana hosted "Drop Everything and Read" programme and book drive.
The Rotary Club of Garden City (Georgetown) launched its first “Little Free Community Library” on Sunday 4th September, 2022, to commemorate International Literacy Day which is observed on September 8th, 2022. The Little Library, which is located in the compound of Cheshire Home, is aimed to serve the Mahaica Community.
The concept is to “Take a book, and Leave a Book”. However, persons can still borrow a book and return it, if they have no book to exchange. Members of the Community are encouraged to utilize it, as the Library contains books for all ages.
Basic Education and Literacy is one of the areas of focus of Rotary International and is the theme for the month of September. This Community Library is our demonstration of creating a community wide network of readers.
On July 30th 2022 at the National Library, Georgetown, Guyana in the presence of a group of children, representatives of the National Library and members of the Club the reader friendly handbook was launched -
Titled “Climate Change and Nature Education for the Next Generation of Environmentalists”
The Rotary Club of Garden City is a ‘Cause Based’ club with a focus on Supporting the Environment - the 7th area of focus of Rotary International. This Handbook is a significant achievement in the club’s quest to encourage early environmental education for children. More than promoting nature this handbook allows children to explore environmental issues, engage in weather matching activities and take action to improve the environment.
It will inspire them to investigate how and why things happen, and will enable them to form their own opinions on complex issues rather than being told. The club is hoping that this handbook will promote critical and creative thinking and lead children to become more involved with their communities and provide the building blocks they need to live eco-friendly and sustainable lives.
This handbook was compiled with extracts from several sources including information from Guyana Government Climate Change network and special reports.
The copies handed over to the National Library will be placed in the reference section of all National Library outlets, Bookmobiles and uploaded to the Electronic Library.
On September 17, 2020, a new Rotary club was added to the fold with the official charter of the Rotary Club of Garden City (Georgetown) now, the 7th Rotary club in Guyana. As we embark upon a new year, my hope is that we learn from our past mistakes, build on our successes, and move forward together in the best interest of our communities, our club, District 7030 and Rotary International.
I thank you whole heartedly for this opportunity and for trusting me with the responsibility of leading you as we continue to work together to embody the notion of Service Above Self. My charge to you this evening is to adapt and strive to be better People of Action and by doing so imagine the lives we can reach,
engage, and positively impact!
